PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL — Dayton rolls to 66-32 victory over River View

FINLEY - Dayton played River View to a near standstill in the first half here Tuesday night, trailing the Panthers 26-25 in a girls non-league prep basketball game.

But the home team dominated the second half and rolled to a 66-32 victory.

"We literally ran out of gas," Bulldogs coach Scott Hudson said. He might just as easily have said that his team nearly ran out of players.

"We're still missing Shelby Smith, a junior and a returning player who is out with a broken toe," Hudson said. "Darcy Hall is playing with a sore ankle, and then Courtney Mings banged her head and we kept her out for the remainder of the game. That left us with seven players, and we just didn't have enough horses."

The Panthers took control of the game by outscoring the Bulldogs 27-4 in the third quarter and then continued to pull away in the fourth.

"River View didn't change a thing," Hudson said. "Actually, they pressed us in the first half and didn't in the second half. We kind of wished they would have kept the press on."

Haley Hess led a balanced River View offense with 17 points. Mallory Smith scored 14 points.

Nicole Lambert led Dayton with 10 points.

Bulldogs Samura Miller and McKayla Bickelhaupt were a combined 2-for-25 from the field on a night when Dayton shot 14-for-58 overall, including 4-for-30 in the second half when the team also turned the ball over 20 times.

But Hudson wasn't discouraged.

"Our rebounding was 100 percent improved over our first game, and we didn't turn the ball over a single time in the first half against their press," the coach said. "Little by little we are getting better. Once we get everybody healthy, we're going to give her a good run."

Dayton takes an 0-2 record into a home game tonight against Tekoa-Oakesdale. The Bulldogs are idle over the weekend before traveling to Pomeroy next Tuesday for a rematch of their season opener. Dayton opens Southeast 2B District play the following weekend at Waitsburg-Prescott and at Asotin.
