DeSales High School Knowledge Bowl to compete in statewide competition

WALLA WALLA - The DeSales High School Knowledge Bowl team will compete in a statewide competition in March after coming in first at a regional meet Tuesday.

DeSales students beat out top teams from Prosser, Kamiakin, Hanford and Richland with 114 points. Richland students earned second place with 88 points, and the third-place team from Hanford had a final score of 87, according to a news release. Others competing Tuesday were Chiawana, Clarkston, Connell, Dayton, Kennewick, Kiona Benton, Pasco, Pomeroy, Prescott, Southridge, Touchet, and Waitsburg high schools.

DeSales team members are Peter Vander Griend, captain; Kincaid Schmitz, Dani Hall, Heather Diaz, Joshua Scheel, and Jinwoo Chang. The team coach is Kathy Ruthven.

The competition included a written round and three oral rounds. DeSales students took first place in the statewide Knowledge Bowl in 2009, and came in fourth in 2010.
