$n$ LETTERS TO THE EDITOR - Amnesty is wrong approach to immigration

At the risk of being labeled a racist, I must respond to Mr. Ruiz's glowing endorsement for Walla Walla to implement its own Dream Act.

For those not familiar with the Dream Act, it is Sen. Harry Reid's further attempt at amnesty for illegal immigrants. This time for approximately 2.1 million youngsters brought into this country illegally by their parents.

The gist being that if they have spent at least three years in high school and go on to college or the military they would be granted a path to citizenship.

There are requirements that they have no criminal record, but I don't see any way that requirement would be enforced as no laws are enforced to prevent illegal immigration in the first place so why enforce other regulations. Mr. Ruiz talks of all the contributions we would all benefit from.

I say Mr. Ruiz lives in a dream world. There are many fine upstanding Hispanic citizens living in Walla Walla and I am proud to have many as friends. I'll tell you what many people in the Walla Walla Valley see and it overshadows the decent, law abiding immigrants of Hispanic origin.

They see, or at least I see, East Side Pirus; Los Malos; Labor Camp Crew and West Side 18th Street gangsters. Walla Walla has a serious gang-violence problem. (Not all gang activity is Hispanic, but the vast majority is and not all those involved in gang activity are illegal immigrants.)

Do I want to encourage more illegal immigration by rewarding those who came here illegally but did not commit any other crime? No.

Amnesty is amnesty no matter how you spin it, and rewarding those who broke our immigration laws to get here is beyond ridiculous.

Liberals are not the only ones who have favored amnesty. In the 1980s, Ronald Reagan gave amnesty to approximately 11 million illegal immigrants. Now we have an estimated 20 million in the U.S.

It didn't help then and it won't help now. Why stop coming if you only get rewarded for it?

For those illegal immigrants who have not committed other crimes, that is appreciated, but Mexico is due south of here, so please leave.

I know of several legal citizens who would love to have those college seats you are being offered.

For the record I am not against immigration, I am against illegal immigration from all foreign countries.
