DAYTON - Turnovers early in the second half of a non-league girls basketball game with Tekoa-Oakesdale left Dayton behind in a 61-52 decision Wednesday.

"It was a great game and our goal is to improve every game, and we've been seeing that," said Dayton coach Scott Hudson. "Last night we finally showed that we can play as a team. We're starting to learn to play together, which is a really good sign."

The Bulldogs led 29-28 at the first half.

But turnovers hurt the effort, which dropped Dayton to 0-3.

The Bulldogs handed the ball over 25 times to the Nighthawks' 18. Dayton had 24 fouls.

"We still have the turnover bug," Hudson said. "We turned it over and fouled too much. We sent too many girls to the foul line and that was a huge difference in the game."

Hudson said the team came back from the half and with a one-point lead flat and a handful of unforced turnovers led to transition baskets.

"That was the difference in the score because they started to get up on us," he said. "It was really tight all the way through. If not for that, it might've been a different result.

"The biggest thing is, there were huge signs of improvement last night.

T-O's Alex Overton sank 11 of 13 from the line and 19-22 overall for 32 points.

McKayla Bickelhaupt led the Bulldogs with 16 point, including three 3's, nine assists and two rebounds.

Dayton lost to River View, 66-32, Tuesday.

The Bulldogs played them to a near standstill in the first half Tuesday night, trailing the Panthers 26-25.

But the home team dominated the second half and rolled to a 66-32 victory.

"We literally ran out of gas," Hudson said. He might just as easily have said that his team nearly ran out of players.

Dayton was missing three players to injuries in the effort and only had seven to play.

The Panthers took control of the game by outscoring the Bulldogs 27-4 in the third quarter and then continued to pull away in the fourth.

"River View didn't change a thing," Hudson said. "Actually, they pressed us in the first half and didn't in the second half. We kind of wished they would have kept the press on."

Bulldogs Samura Miller and McKayla Bickelhaupt were a combined 2-for-25 from the field on a night when Dayton shot 14-for-58 overall, including 4-for-30 in the second half when the team also turned the ball over 20 times.

Dayton travels to Pomeroy next Tuesday and opens Southeast 2B league play Friday at Waitsburg-Prescott.
