$n$ Volunteers sought for program to support veterans

WALLA WALLA -- Compassion Corps is recruiting volunteers for a support program that offers volunteers the privilege of providing a compassionate presence for veterans with serious illnesses or advanced chronic diseases.

The nonprofit agency will present an informational meeting today at 7 p.m., in Building 78 (theater) at Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

"This is a great opportunity to serve veterans and receive internship hours for your training and volunteer hours," said Linda Wondram, spokeswoman for the Walla Walla VA.

Selected volunteers will be trained to provide such things as companionship, friendship, errand-running and respite care.

Volunteers will be matched with veterans after successfully completing a 20-hour training in palliative care, scheduled to begin Feb. 1. For more information call Jackie Russell or Catherine Zimmerman at 509-525-5200, ext. 26747 or 26270.
