Longtime area resident Robert Bruce McPherson, died Dec. 3, 2010, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane . He was born to Bessie and Frank McPherson on June 2, 1926, in Richland.
The McPherson family, originally from Columbia County, returned that same year (1926) to the Dayton area, where Robert Bruce attended grade school, later graduating in 1944 from Dayton High School. He was
a United States Marine, ending his service in 1947.
He married Evelyn Elizabeth Breithaupt in July of 1949. They divorced after 36 years of marriage in 1985. In 1989 he married Judy Ritter. That marriage ended in 2000. Robert Bruce joined the Washington State Department of Corrections in the late 1950s. In the late 1960s he brought his family to Walla Walla from Centralia, Wash., and together they logged on the McPherson property in Columbia County on Cahill Mountain and other parts of Eastern Washington until the mid-1970s. In 1976 he moved to Spokane, where he remained until his death.
Robert Bruce is survived by five children, daughters, Patricia K. Wickholm of Milton-Freewater, Carol J. MacPherson and Sharon L. Gossett, both of Walla Walla; sons, Bob MacPherson of Milton-Freewater
and Stephen C. McPherson of Mead, Wash.; a sister, Viola Cook of Colville, Wash.; Bill H. Elzey, whom he considered another son, of Touchet; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A son, David Bruce McPherson; his parents; two sisters; and two brothers preceded him in death.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, in Dayton City Cemetery.
