WALLA WALLA - Starting next year the library will fine 25 cents per day for an overdue book instead of the flat $2 fee.
"We have never liked charging somebody $2 from the very first day, there is no motivation to get it back quickly," said interim library Director Beth Hudson.
Under the current system, the overdue fine on an adult book is a flat $2 fee and a $1 fee for children's books.
Starting Jan. 1, the fine will be 25 cents per day for each adult book and 10 cents per day for each children's books, with an $8 cap for both.
Once the cap has been reached and after a certain time frame, the borrower will be charged for the replacement cost of the book.
Audio books and CDs will follow the new fining system.
DVDs will remain the same, with a $1 fine per day, with a $5 cap.
Hudson said the current system has been in place for at least the 20 years that she has been with the Walla Walla Library.
