Whitman's women improve to 5-2 with the 76-52 win to open the Kim Evanger Raney Classic.

WALLA WALLA - Whitman College ran its early season record to 5-2 with a 76-52 women's basketball victory over Menlo College in Saturday afternoon's opening game of the fourth annual Kim Evanger Raney Memorial Classic in Sherwood Center.

The tournament concludes Sunday with games between Whitman and College of Idaho at 2 p.m. and Menlo and Walla Walla University at 4 p.m.

Whitman jumped on Menlo from the outset in Saturday's opener and rolled to a 40-20 halftime lead. The Missionaries stretched their lead to as many as 42 points, 69-27, with 8:41 left in the second half before coasting home to victory.

Jenele Peterson paced a balanced Whitman attack with 12 points. Rebecca Sexton added 11 points and six blocked shots, and Mary Madden came off the bench to hit a pair of 3-pointers en route to 11 points.

Sarah Anderegg (nine points, nine rebounds) and Jennifer Keyes (nine points, seven boards) came close to double-doubles. Kelly Peterson also tallied nine points for the Missionaries.

Whitman shot 49.1 percent from the floor for the game and outrebounded the Oaks 42-30.
