LA GRANDE - Jesse Sargent and Ryan Bullock won individual titles here Saturday to lead Mac-Hi to a second-place finish during the annual Muilenburg Invitational wrestling tournament.
The Pioneers accumulated 253 points, just 7.5 less than Class 6A Oregon City. Burns finished third with 220 points, Pendleton was next with 214.5 and host La Grande rounded out the top five with 170 points.
Eighteen teams were on hand for the event.
"Every one of our kids wrestled really well. This is the best we've looked early in the season," Mac-Hi coach Beau Chester said. "This tournament brought in 47 state placers (from last season)."
Sargent and Bullock went undefeated (5-0 and 4-0) to win championships at 130 and 135 pounds, respectively.
"This is the best tournament Jesse's ever wrestled," Chester said. "He beat four state placers (from a year ago). He had to grind the whole way. Ryan was unbelievable."
Bullock improved his individual record on the season to 7-0. All of his triumphs have come by opening-round pins, Chester said.
Mac-Hi had eight other wrestlers finish sixth or better. The list included Braden Moller (152 pounds, 4-1 record, second place), Brandon Kralman (171, 4-1, second), Jensen Jones (140, 4-1, third), Jaime Torres (112, 4-2, fourth), Blake Yensen (125, 3-1, fifth), Tavis Hodgen (130, 5-1, fifth), Troy Kessler (152, 3-2, sixth) and Victor Perez (189, 4-2, sixth).
"Brandon wrestled so well," Chester said. "He lost (in the championship match) to a two-time state champion from Riverside."
Mac-Hi hosts its annual Christmas tournament Saturday.
