Betty Mae Cummings, 81 of Walla Walla, Wa died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010, at Providence St. Mary Medical Center. Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 18, 1 p.m. at the First Assembly of God, 1919 Fern St. in Walla Walla. Private family interment will be held prior to services in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Walla Walla Community College Nursing Program through the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main St, Milton-Freewater, OR.
One of five children, Betty was born July 29, 1929, in Watertown, S.D. She was the daughter of James and Lorenda Moorehouse Sundstrom. When she was a young girl she moved with her family to Clarkston, Wash., graduating from Clarkston High School.
She met her husband-to-be, Samuel, at the Newberry's store in Clarkston where she was working. They were married Jan. 18, 1950, in Lewiston, Idaho, and lived in Troy, Ore. before moving to Milton-Freewater in November 1955. Mr. and Mrs. Cummings owned and operated a dairy farm and orchard. Upon retirement they moved to Walla Walla. Betty co-owned the Christian Supply Center.
She was known for her cooking skills, made many quilts and was a member of the First Assembly of God.
She is survived by her husband, Samuel of Walla Walla; three daughters, Pat Schluter of The Dalles, Ore., Judy Monzingo of Safford, Ariz., and Linda Christiano of Pasco; two brothers, Clinton Sundstrom of San Mateo, Calif., and Everett Sundstrom of Australia; two sisters, Shirley Driver of Vancouver, and Ilo Shrum of Sacramento, Calif.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Stanley Cummings, in 1986.
