The funding, $250,000 for one year, would cost 65 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation in 2012.

DAYTON -- The Dayton School Board will seek a $250,000, one-year maintenance and operation levy in February.

Board members chose to seek the levy rather than a capital projects levy during their meeting Wednesday.

Plagued by continuing enrollment drops, the district has taken a number of money-saving measures during the past five years, including eliminating counselor positions, teaching positions and programs.

Funding cuts by the state are not fully known, but Superintendent Doug Johnson said he knows the district won't receive $113,000 for the education jobs bill, and about $5,000 for levy equalization.

The 2010-2011 budget is based on an enrollment of 460 full-time-equivalent students, while the current enrollment is 454 FTE.

The estimated cost of the levy would be 65 cents per $1,000 assessed valuation, meaning the owner of a home valued at $100,000 would pay $65 for the levy. The levy would be collected in 2012.
