Dorothy Sutherland


Dorothy Lee Sutherland, 96, died Dec. 14, 2010. She resided at 534 Boyer Ave.

Dorothy was born Sept. 13, 1914, in Paterson, Wash., to James and Bessie Goff Anderson. She was one of five siblings. She spent her early years in the Horse Heaven/Prosser area. When she was 11, the family moved to the Walla Walla Valley. They settled in Touchet where she finished her school years, graduating in 1933.

In 1936, she married Guy Sutherland at the Central Christian Church. They made their home in Walla Walla. She has remained here until her death. Her husband died in 1978. Having always dreamed of becoming a nurse, she returned to school in 1956. In 1958, she graduated from community college (vocational) as an LPN. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital and the Whitman College Health Center, retiring from there in 1979. Dorothy prided herself in working hard. She loved to cook and had many fond memories of cooking for harvest crews of 12 to 14 men in a cookhouse that was moved into the wheat fields. Dorothy was a member of the Central Christian Church for over 65 years. She served as a deaconess emeritus, was service chairman for 20 years and a member of the Millie Roberts Circle. She also had been a member of the Rebekah Lodge for over 60 years. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and gardening. She loved her family and was the center of planning for reunions.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Harold Ellenberger of Walla Walla; grandson and his wife, Scott and Jani Carmichael of Hillsboro, Ore; two great grandchildren, Todd and Kindel, also of Hillsboro; a sister, Helen Kissinger of Walla Walla; brothers James Anderson of Lynnwood, Wash., and Perry Anderson of Walla Walla; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and brother, Lewis Anderson.

Viewing and visitation will be held Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W. Alder St., Walla Walla, Wash. The funeral service will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home with the Rev. Roland Shanks officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Christian Church or Walla Walla Community Hospice through the funeral home.
