ELGIN - Shannon Strickland's sharpshooting and cold shooting by Helix in the middle quarters carried Elgin to a 35-30 girls prep basketball victory here Tuesday night.

Strickland sank five 3-point baskets and scored a team-high 15 points to pace the Huskies' victory. Veronica Lathrop scored eight points for Elgin and Cheyanne Predmore chipped in with six.

Helix's Chyanne Hack led all scorers with 20 points and helped the Grizzlies forge a 12-4 lead after one quarter. But Helix managed just eight points combined in the second and third periods and trailed 24-20 going to the fourth quarter.

"We got off to a nice start, but we struggled to put the ball in the hoop in the second and third quarters," Helix coach Dean Fouquette said. "That's been our problem most of the season. We get off to good starts but have a hard time maintaining it."

Ely finished with six points as she and Hack combined for 26 of the Grizzlies' 30 points.

Helix dropped to 3-6 on the season going into next week's Helix Holiday Tournament. The Grizzlies face Powder Valley Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the Grizzlie gym.

In Tuesday's other girls game, Waitsburg-Prescott meets Klickitat at 6 p.m. In boys play, Helix faces Powder Valley at 4:30 and Waitsburg-Prescott plays Klickitat at 7:30.
