UMATILLA, Ore. - The boys basketball rubber match between Weston-McEwen and Umatilla here Monday night proved to be the most competitive of the three games.

The TigerScots rallied from a seven-point deficit in the third quarter to defeat the Vikings 62-56 in the non-league affair that wrapped up the pre-Christmas portion of W-M's schedule. The TigerScots hiked their season record to 6-2 and return to action Tuesday when they square off against Echo at 3 p.m. in the first round of the D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic on the Whitman College campus in Walla Walla.

In two earlier games between the TigerScots and the Vikes, Weston-McEwen won by 28 points, 72-44, Dec. 3 in Athena and Umatilla prevailed by 10 points, 53-43, during the final day of the Columbia River Clash here in Umatilla.

"This was a close game all the way," TigerScots coach Brian Pickard said. "We extended a lead to eight points in the first half and they led by as many as seven in the second."

The TigerScots outscored the Vikings 19-9 in the fourth quarter to wipe out a 47-43 Umatilla lead after three quarters.

"Down the stretch, what got it for us was free throws," Pickard said, noting that Tyler Babb was 5-for-6 from the line and Miles Thul 3-for-4 in the fourth quarter.

Pickard also praised his team's defense, junior Ron Terjeson in particular, for the comeback victory. The 6-foot-4 post had four blocked shots in the final eight minutes and six for the game.

"And on all four of those blocks in the fourth, we got possession of the ball," Pickard said.

Junior Dallas Reich was the TigerScots' offensive leader with 26 points. Babb finished with 13 points and Thul added 12.

"All year long, we've had those three in double figures," Pickard said. "One usually gets between 20 and 30 points and the other two are around 15. As long as that keeps happening, we're going to be in good shape."

Reich also hauled down 10 rebounds as the TigerScots claimed a 27-24 advantage on the boards.
