Ruth Sabina Bachtold Fleenor

Died August 18th, 2010. She was born April 1, 1916 in Walla Walla to Albert and Anna Schuler Bachtold of Wasan, Kanton of Bern, Switzerland. She was the second of three children and lived with her parents and brothers, Albert and
Paul Bachtold at 404 N Third. She attended Baker School and graduated from Walla Walla High School. She also graduated from Walla Walla Business College.

Ruth started work in 1935 at the Walla Walla Meat and Cold Storage in their administrative offices. She worked there until 1942. She married William Francis Fleenor on June 28th, 1942 in Walla Walla. She went with Francis to Texas where is he was stationed before heading overseas. Francis was with the tank destroyer unit, which landed D-Day plus 6 in Normandy, France.
Ruth returned to Walla Walla and worked for Baker- Boyer Bank before joining Sherwood and Roberts. She was the secretary for Don Sherwood until 1951, when their first child, William Paul Fleenor, was born. Francis and his brothers started Fleenor's Markets and she became a part- time bookkeeper. They built a new home at 129 Stone St.

Ruth loved bowling and bowled for 60 years, includ- ing many trips to the state tournament with her bowling friends. She also golfed, loved exercise classes and sewing, and especially quilts. In 1955, her daughter was born, Kay Frances Fleenor. When Ruth's children were growing up she was involved in Little League, Girl Scouts and the PTA. In May of 1970 she received the coveted Golden Acorn Award for her many hours of PTA work. Ruth served on the YWCA Board, Walla Walla Figure Skating Board and as President of the Women's Board of the Walla Walla Country Club. She was a member of Narcissa Rebekah Lodge #2 for 65 years, Lady Elks Rotary Anns, American Legion Auxillary, Walla Walla Symphony Society, Chapter CI of PEO, St Paul's Episcopal Church and the Republican Party Ladies Group. After retiring, she and Francis spent a number of win- ters in Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona. They traveled to Seattle many times to visit their two granddaughters, Mackenzie and Katie, often attending University of Washington foot- ball games. They spent many years at their home near the Walla Walla Country Club.

Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, and is survived by her son, William Paul Fleenor and daughter Kay Fleenor Compton, two granddaughters Mackenzie and Katie Compton, her nephew, Wayne Bachtold and wife, Ann of Walla Walla, her nieces, Paula Bachtold of Pacific Wa., and Toni Williamson of Corvallis, Or., and numer- ous grand nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at the Walla Walla Country Club, her favorite place
on earth, on December 28th, 2-4 pm.
