Bernice Mae Kaufmann, 84, passed away December 19, 2010, at Washington Odd Fellows Home in Walla Walla, Wa.
Bernie was born to Henry and Marie Petersen on July 26, 1926, on her family's homestead in Amidon, ND. She was the youngest of four children. When she was a young girl she and her family moved west to escape the dust bowl. She lived on the family farm in Vancouver, Wa. Until she graduated form Battle Ground High School. She then moved to McMinnville, Or. Where she attended Linfield College.
She married Melvin Kaufmann on June 25, 1945.They settled in Portland, Or. Where they opened a small chain of ballroom dance studios. In later years Bernie went back to school to become a minister. She retired form the ministry in 1989, but continued to teach spiritual classes until she moved to Walla Walla in 2005.
Bernie is survived by her life-long partner, Melvin of Walla Walla; daughter and son-in-law, Racquel and Doug Ralph of Walla Walla; daughter, Jodi Kaufmann of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter, Amy Conner (Kris); grandson, Calvin Ralph; granddaughter, Nahed Shahabi; and ten great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by daughter, Tori Kaufmann.
There will be a celebration of life in the spring.
