WALLA WALLA - Odessa-Harrington toppled DeSales 32-24 Friday night at Sherwood Center in an opening-round game at the D.A. Davidson Christmas Classic basketball tournament and tumbled the previously undefeated Irish into the girls consolation bracket.

The loss also left DeSales coach Tim Duncan in a somewhat sour mood.

"We couldn't score," Duncan said, "We are a lot better shooting team than we showed tonight. It is because we didn't have anybody tough enough to step up and hit the big shots."

DeSales saw its season record slide to 4-1 going into today's 1:30 p.m. game against University Prep of Seattle.

Odessa-Harrington, which won for just the second time this season, moves into tonight's 8:30 tournament semifinal against Valley Christian with a 2-4 record.

DeSales fell behind 13-2 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Titans 20-13 in the middle two quarters to pull within four points, 26-22, going to the fourth quarter. But a three-point fourth was the Irish's undoing.

"Yeah, absolutely we had a bad shooting night," Duncan said.

The high scorer for DeSales was Erin Guisti with six points. Annie Higgins added five points and Ali Zander and Chantel Blanc added four points each.

Lacey Hirst scored 11 points to lead Odessa-Harrington and Justyne Talkington contributed seven points. Talkington also had a team-high seven rebounds for the Titans was the Irish's Giusti led all rebounders with 10.

What kept the Irish in the game was a 44-37 advantage in rebounding and a defense that forced 23 turnovers. Irish players were credited with nine steals in the game.

"We worked hard on the defensive end," Duncan said, "and pretty hard on the boards."

DeSales actually drew within one point of the Titans late in the third quarter. But turnovers and missed free throws finally caught up with the Irish in the fourth when they were outscored 6-3. DeSales had 16 turnovers on the night and sank 4-of-14 free throws in the game.

"We had way too many turnovers," Duncan said.

Duncan also gave credit to the other team.

"They are a quality outfit," he said of the Titans. "They absolutely played a good game and we just didn't handle ourselves well."
