ATHENA — Weston-McEwen’s boys basketball team had leads of 21-18 after the first period and 38-35 at halftime over Waitsburg-Prescott, but managed just 10 points in the second half to lose, 73-48, in a non-conference match-up.

Mac Sohappy led the TigerScots’ charge with four 3-pointers in the first half and had 14 points by the intermission.

Teamed with Miguel Penaloza, Sohappy and Penaloza scored 20 of the TigerScot’s first 35 points.

The tandem was stopped when Penaloza was forced to sit one minute into the third quarter with four fouls.

The offense never flowed the same again and the inside threat to open up the outside game was gone.

"Our starters had various bumps and bruises," W-M coach Brian Pickard said. "So we decided to rest them in this non-league game and have them ready for our important conference matchups this weekend. There may not be much sense in playing non-league games like this one so late in the year."The man defense kept us from getting as many good outside looks," he said. "Our inside scoring threat (Penaloza) was also sitting with four fouls much of the second half."

Pickard applauded the young starting squad he put on the court.

"We set up a whole new offense for our starting five tonight," he said. "We knew their strength would be outside shooting, and we took advantage of that while Waitsburg-Prescott sat back in a zone in the first half. I was proud of the way our guys played for the first half, but then they may have become fatigued in the second half without having played the extended minutes this year."

The TigerScots hit all seven of their 3-pointers in the first half.

W-P had three players score in double figures, led by Zach Bartlow’s game-high 20 points.

Lucan Gerke put up 18 points, and he also scooped up a game-high 11 rebounds.

Ben Kiefel dropped in 11 points.

Without W-M’s leading rebounder Dallas Reich on the court, W-P outrebounded W-M, 44-18.

W-P next plays Saturday at Garfield-Palouse.

Weston-McEwen next plays at Irrigon Friday.
