Missionary men fall short in 103-90 shootout at George Fox

Despite shooting 50 percent and placing five in double figures, the Whits can't keep up with the Bruins.

NEWBERG, Ore. - Despite shooting 50 percent from the floor with five players scoring in double figures, the Whitman College men's basketball team dropped a 103-90 Northwest Conference shootout to George Fox here Friday night.

Whitman, which downed the Bruins 93-89 last month in Walla Walla, saw its record fall to 4-7 in the NWC and 10-10 overall. Whitman placed at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore., Saturday.

George Fox retained its hold on third place in the NWC and improved to 7-4 in conference and 10-10 on the season.

The Missionaries, down by 11 points late in the first half, rallied to within 47-43 at intermission. Justin Artis, a Whitman junior, hit the first bucket of the second to make it a two-point game, but the Bruins responded with an 18-7 run to expand its lead to 65-52 with 13 minutes left to play.

Whitman spent the rest of the night trying to whittle down its deficit. Senior Jordan Wheeler knocked down two free throws with five minutes remaining to pull the Missionaries to within eight points, 85-77, but that was close as they would come.

Freshman Peter Clark, who leads the NWC in total 3-point baskets, hit five of Whitman's 10 longballs and finished with a team-high 17 points. Junior Daniel Davidson and sophomore David Michaels combined to make 12-of-17 shots from the floor with each player scoring 14 points.

The Missionaries also got 11 points from freshman LuQuam Thompson and 10 points and seven assists from sophomore Brandon Shaw. Wheeler added eight points and Artis seven.

The Bruins, who shot 57 percent from the floor and made 32-of-41 free throw attempts, got 26 points from Stephen Wiseley and 25 more from Alex Stockner. Rich Smith contributed a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Evan Atwater tossed in 13 points.
