ATHENA - It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out a 22-point halftime deficit to the Pilot Rock Rockets is a tough hole to climb out of.
Weston-McEwen's girls understood that, and instead focused on winning the little battles in the second half - and did.
Unfortunately, the little victories still added up to a 50-35 loss in a Blue Mountain Conference basketball game here Saturday.
"We played so poorly in the first half," W-M coach Amber Doremus said. "The girls came out in the second half with smaller goals. Not throwing the ball away, winning the battle on the boards.
"We were down 19-12 on the boards in the first half. In the second half we beat them 21-10. Everyone got a rebound. And we only turned the ball over five times in the second half after giving it up 27 times in the first," she said.
The Rockets were paced by twin 13-point games from Erica Drake and Liz Willingham.
Tiffany Cain led the TigerScots in both points (15) and rebounds (eight).
"Tiffany was being a real leader tonight and that's what she needs to do as one of our upper classmen," Doremus said.
W-M's Makayla Christopher added 12 points.
The loss drops the TigerScots to 2-20 on the season and 1-11 in league play.
Weston-McEwen finishes the season this week with games at Elgin on Tuesday and at home versus Stanfield Friday.
