WALLA WALLA -- Local AT&T cell phone Internet customers now have access to 3G Internet service, as long as their phones support the new technology.Alfred Diaz can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or 526-8325.
Director of Operations Joe Padilla said the company started installing the new 3G tower transmitters early last month, and service should now be available in Walla Walla, College Place and Milton-Freewater.
But the service won't be up to its full potential until this fall when the new enhanced 3G high-speed downlink packet access system is integrated into the regional network, a technician with company said.
On Friday, the company held an open house for its new Call Me center, 11 W. Alder St., which is located only a feet away from competitor Sprint Store, 15 W. Alder.
"If you are looking for a restaurant, you want to go where there are a lot close by. And we encourage our customers to shop," Padilla said about being right next to the Sprint Store.
AT&T's new 3G service will allow customers to download from the Internet at speeds up to 3.6 megabytes per second. By October, that speed is expected to increase to 7.6 megabytes per second.
