Those of you not in the know are about to be: Free tax help is available at The Center at the Park, according to the February issue of The Bottom Line. AARP/IRS income tax counselors are available through April 15 at the senior center, 720 Sprague Ave.

They accept a small donation for copies and for Center expenses, if participants wish.

Assistance is mainly for middle- and low-income taxpayers, with special attention for those 60 and older.

Call 527-3775 to make an appointment. Assistance will be offered from 9 a.m.-noon Mondays; 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays. Electronic filing is only done at the center.

Be prepared to provide information regarding 2009 expenses and income and the 2008 tax return.

This service is staffed by volunteers in the community experienced in preparing income taxes and who annually update their skills.

WSU GEAR UP Eighth-Grade Career Day helps students better understand how important it is to graduate from high school and to have a plan in place after graduation, said Gretchen Hormel-Tomkins.

Gretchen, who is resource development specialist with Washington State University's program at Walla Walla Community College, said 550 eighth-grade students and their teachers are expected.

The event will be at WWCC on March 22.

Students can learn about what it takes to be college-ready while attending career exploration sessions.

Presenters will sign in at 9:30 a.m. Following a half-hour preparation time, five 25-minute career exploration sessions are scheduled.

Approximately 15 students will attend each session.
