Alyene V. Hawes, 1111 S.E. 3rd Spc31, Canby, Ore., formerly of Milton-Freewater, passed away Feb. 2, 2010 at her home at the age of 76 years. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Milton-Freewater with Father Gabriel Ezeh officiating. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home. Concluding services and interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Francis Altar Society through the funeral home.

Mrs. Hawes was born July 8, 1933, in Lafayette, Ind., the daughter of Don Joe and Lola Dutcher Campbell. At the age of 10, her father passed away and the family moved to LaGrande, Ore. Her mother married Leo Streit and he adopted her and her sisters. She attended schools in LaGrande. While attending Eastern Oregon University, she met Charles Hawes on a blind date. The couple were married Sept. 10, 1955 in LaGrande. After her husband received his teaching license, they moved to Milton-Freewater. Mrs. Hawes lived and supported the community of Milton-Freewater for 53 years. She was an active member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, former president of the Altar Society, Church Women United and the Bread Basket. She enjoyed reading and was a volunteer for many functions. Mr. Hawes preceded her in death on May 30, 1995.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Nita Hawes, Hermiston, Michael and Carol Hawes, Cannon Beach, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law, Jenifer and John Hilton, Oregon City, Ore.; two sisters, Kay Croft, Milwaukie, Ore., Martha Wills, Yakima; sister-in-law, Creagh Hawes, Corvallis; three grandchildren, Bridget, Brady and Charles; three great-grandchildren, Awbry, Johnny and Emily; numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hawes was preceded in death by her parents, mother-in-law, Nora E. Hawes. Arrangements are in care of Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S Main, Milton-Freewater.
