Sumerlin tabbed for spot in the East-West football game

WALLA WALLA - Wa-Hi senior Zach Sumerlin, a two-time Big Nine Conference Cascade Division Offensive Lineman of the Year, has been invited to play in the Washington state East-West Shrine football game in June.

"I got a letter, and I'm still looking through it," Sumerlin said. "If it works out, I'll be playing for the East Team. Probably be playing `D' line.

"We have to start turning in our papers now, and have them ready by March," he said. "That way they can get everything sorted out.

"If you've made a commitment to a college, you might not be able to play. So they want to have all of the alternates ready," Sumerlin said.

Since Sumerlin has made a commitment to attend the Air Force Academy and play football next fall, he must receive a clearance to play in the game.

"So, I'm going to talk with my coach (at the Air Force Academy) in the next night or two," he said. "I really want to play."

The rosters for the team haven't been posted yet, and the game usually takes place in early June.
