Touchet Indians girls basketball team lose close game to Lacrosse-Washtucna Tigercats

TOUCHET - The Touchet Indians girls basketball team fell to the Lacrosse-Washtucna Tigercats in a closely contested game, 46-44 in overtime, here Wednesday night in the first round of the district playoffs.

Zoe Weaver scored a team-high 11 points and Emily Huesby grabbed a game-high 20 rebounds for the Indians.

Huesby added five points, two steals and two blocks on the night.

"Emily played hard, rebounded well," Touchet coach Scott Pumphrey said. "She has been doing that all year long, working hard and it is now paying off for her."

Other top scorers for Touchet were Carley Frazier with nine points and ReAna Butler with eight.

"Butler played well inside the post for us, scoring the ball and rebounding," Pumphrey said. "I just wish we would have gotten her the ball more inside."

Butler added 11 rebounds and Frazier had nine.

Liza Pedroza added seven points for Touchet.

An inside-outside combination of guard Gladys Martinez and forward Della Fleming was all L-W needed. The duo showed up in the third and fourth quarters. Martinez ended up with 18 points and nine steals, and Fleming had 15 points to go with nine boards.

The game was a one-point lead at halftime 17-16 Indians and was tied after the third quarter 27-27.

The end of the fourth quarter saw the Indians collapse and the Tigercats pounce to even send it into OT.

The Indians built a five-point lead, on the strength of their good free throw shooting, with forty-one seconds remaining in regulation.

A steal by Fleming, a three-pointer by Martinez left Touchet up by two points with seven seconds left.

Martinez then stole the in-bound pass from Touchet under the hoop, was fouled and hit both free throws to tie the game and send it into overtime.

In overtime, the Indians started with a two-point lead on two free throws by Weaver.

Fleming then hit a turnaround jumper to tie it.

Huesby was fouled, hit 1-of-2 free throws with one minute remaining to give the Indians the 44-43 advantage.

To reclaim the lead, Martinez hit a pair from the line.

The Tigercats left the door open, hitting just 1-of-3 remaining free throws, but Touchet couldn't score again.

The loss sends Touchet to play the loser of Friday's Rosalia vs. St. John-Endicott game, at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

The Indians can only afford one more loss before being eliminated from the district playoffs.

Two teams advance to state, and the remainder of the tournament is played at St. John-Endicott.
