Umatilla County commissioner to seek second term

Larry Givens of Umapine has announced plans to run for the county board again.

PENDLETON - Umatilla County Commissioner Larry Givens has announced he intends to seek a second term in office.

Givens said Wednesday he will be filing his candidacy with the county elections office before the end of this week. Although the deadline to file is March 9, "I'm going to be so busy I didn't want to procrastinate," he said.

Elected in 2006, Givens will be running for the Position 2 seat on the three-member board of commissioners. Commissioner Bill Hansell is also up for election this year for the Position 1 seat. The Position 3 seat held by Commissioner Dennis Doherty is not up for election until 2012.

A native of Umatilla County, Givens and his wife, Anne, live in Umapine where they operate their farming business, L&A Ranches Hay Sales. After graduating from college, Givens was an educator in Milton-Freewater for more than 30 years, first with the Umapine School District and then with the Milton-Freewater Unified School District until his retirement in 2003.

If re-elected, Givens said his first priority will be creation of a sustainable economic growth in the county and his second will be water issues, including projects to increase water use efficiency, storage and conservation. A third priority will be keeping Umatilla County's budget balanced in the face of falling or flat revenues.
