WALLA WALLA -- A student-led effort to raise funds for victims of Haiti's massive Jan. 12 earthquake has netted nearly $5,000.

The vast majority of the "Hope for Haiti" drive, coordinated by Walla Walla High School students, was raised Saturday during the school's basketball games. Students put together a silent auction that raised about $1,390, and sold T-shirts with the Hope for Haiti slogan during the game that brought in about $1,747, said Wa-Hi teacher Jillian DeBritz.

A student dance that followed the basketball games raised about $745, and an ongoing drive at the school has brought in about $1,100.

Close to 200 students in DeBritz's ASB leadership class and freshman social studies classes worked in some way on the Hope for Haiti initiative.
