Pioneers plowed by Ontario girls

ONTARIO, Ore. - Slow starts in both halves proved the undoing of the Mac-Hi girls here Saturday as the Pioneers dropped their Greater Oregon League road basketball game against first-place Ontario, 50-31.

"The third quarter killed us," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Pumphrey said. "The ball wouldn't go in the basket. That's going to kill you against Ontario, who's the best team in the league right now. When only three people score, it's a tough night."

Mac-Hi's Sierra Burchell led all scorers with 21 points. The 6-foot post also grabbed game-high honors with nine boards.

The loss drops the Pioneers to 7-15 overall and 1-6 in league.

The Pioneers wrap up the regular season with two games next week, Tuesday hosting LaGrande and Friday at home versus Baker.

Regardless of the outcomes of next week's games, Mac-Hi will finish the season fourth in the GOL and faces a district playoff game against the GOL's No. 3 team. The winner of that game qualifies for the 24-team Oregon Class 4A state playoffs.
