WALLA WALLA - After canning nine 3-pointers to build a 13-point halftime lead, Whitworth University held off the Whitman College men over the final 20 minutes to post a 70-57 Northwest Conference victory Tuesday night in Sherwood Center.

With Justin Artis filling the hoop with a season-high 32 points, Whitman twice rallied to within eight points in the second half before the Pirates pulled away late in the game, running their NWC record to 15-0.

Winning its 21st straight game, Whitworth is 22-2 overall with one game left in the regular season.

Wade Gebbers hit six 3-pointers and led the Pirates with 20 points. Whitworth also got 13 rebounds and 11 points from Nate Montgomery and 11 points apiece from Eric Beal and Clay Gebbers.

Artis hit five of seven 3-point attempts and was eight of 15 from the floor overall. He also converted 11 of 14 free throw opportunities and was one of three Missionaries with six rebounds.

Artis, a junior, was the only Whitman player scoring in double figures. Freshmen Peter Clark and LuQuam Thompson added eight and seven points, respectively.

Whitman opened the second half on a five-minute 10-5 run to trim its deficit to 44-36. After Whitworth stretched its lead back to 13, the Missionaries made a final push, getting a Clark 3-pointer with six minutes left to make it a 60-51 game.

But the Pirates answered with a game-clinching 8-0 spurt that included David Riley's 3-pointer.

Whitworth finished with 14 3-pointers and the same of free throws while outrebounding Whitman 40-36. Neither side shot well, most notably during the first several minutes of the opening half.

After Wade Gebbers bagged a 3-pointer to open the scoring at the 18:37 mark, the scoreboard wasn't needed until Artis hit one of two free throws to tally Whitman's first point with 12:40 showing on the clock.

Artis followed with the first Missionary basket, a 3-pointer, with 12 minutes left, to cut the early Pirate lead to 6-4. Clark drilled another Whitman three to put the home team on top 7-6.
