Kenneth E. "Ken" Newby, 85, lifetime Dayton resident, died Feb. 13, 2010, at Booker Rest Home in Dayton. Hubbard-Rogg Funeral Home, 111 S. Second St., Dayton, assisted the family with cremation arrangements.

A dinner in his honor will be held at the Dayton Eagles, on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2010, at 1 p.m. All who knew him are invited.

Kenneth was born June 1, 1924, in Dayton, to Herber and Gertrude Patrick Newby. He attended schools in Dayton and was a member of the Dayton High School graduating class of 1942. He served in the United States Navy Air Corps. from 1943 to 1946. He was aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Franklin when it was severely crippled by suicide bombers. He married Betty Head, Aug. 28, 1970, in Dayton.

He liked the outdoors and enjoyed spending time fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting and huckleberry picking. He was a past president of the Dayton Eagles and the Dayton American Legion.

Ken is survived by his wife, Betty; daughter, Myra Hines, of Clackamas, Ore; son, Larry Newby, of Camas, Wash; four stepdaughters; and numerous grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Reynold Burton; brother, Donald; and stepgrandson, James Newby.
