Gar-Pal rides fast start past Irish

The Vikings open up a 22-10 first-quarter lead and maintain it for the 56-44 victory over the DeSales boys in the SE 2B District tournament Thursday.

PALOUSE - Garfield-Palouse shooters couldn't miss in the first quarter of its Southeast 2B District first-round game against DeSales' boys here Thursday, and rode that lead to a 56-44 victory over the Irish.

The loss pits the Irish against Tekoa-Oakesdale, a 59-30 loser to Waitsburg-Prescott Thursday night, at 3 p.m. Saturday in Colfax in a loser-out game.

The Vikings outscored DeSales 22-10 in the first eight minutes. The Irish played Gar-Pal evenly the rest of the game.

"They didn't seem to miss in the first quarter," DeSales coach Mike Giusti said. "We hung in defensively, and then kind of settled down. We (cut it) to eight in the fourth quarter, and then Pat (Richard) fouled out.

"We're the fourth seed, and we didn't play like it," he said. "We played confidently."

Richard led the Irish with 18 points before fouling out. He picked up his fourth foul late in the third quarter.

"We just had to play him," Giusti said of Richard's foul trouble. "We couldn't take him out, they (his fouls) were all on shots, so you can't argue with it."

Lee Roach picked up eight of his team-leading 12 points in that decisive first quarter.

Blake Slocum put up 11 points for the Vikings, with Steven Griffin in double figures at 10.

Giusti praised his team's defensive effort.

"(Gar-Pal's) Gavin Burt is one of the leading scorers in the league, and (DeSales') Tommy Gregg did a good job on him (limiting Burt to eight points)," he said. "And Sean (Williams) took him for awhile. They both worked him.

"Our perimeter defense has really gotten better," Giusti said. "We've taken on, in the last four or five game, some good guards. Tommy and Sean have done a good job on the perimeter."

The Irish recently played a regular-season game at T-O without an ill Matt Wujek and with Richard coming off a dislocated finger injury, Giusti said, with DeSales taking a 55-46 defeat.

"We're really looking forward to it," Giusti said of Saturday's matchup in Colfax. "We feel like we played them tough up there. Our kids really want to go up and get one and play again Wednesday at Whitman. We'll have a short practice tonight, watch some tape, and get ready to play Saturday."
