WAITSBURG - Waitsburg-Prescott's appetite for destruction of opponent Tekoa-Oakesdale was nearly insatiable here Thursday as W-P came out great guns on offense and finished smelling like roses in the 59-30 dismantling of Southeast 2B District first-round boys playoff foe Nighthawks.

And W-P's rebounding and defensive efforts weren't too shabby, either.

The Southern Division No. 2 seed, Waitsburg-Prescott, held the North's third seed scoreless through the first six minutes of the game. W-P opened on a 12-0 run, before settling in for a 14-4 lead at the first-quarter break.

Waitsburg-Prescott outrebounded the Nighthawks in the opening period 15-7, including seven offensive boards, to set the tone for the rest of the night. W-P dominated the board battle 50-to-24 for the game.

Waitsburg-Prescott extended its lead to 23-10 at halftime, and - with an explosive third quarter - 36-10 after three.

W-P's bench built the lead to 32 points three times during the fourth while playing against T-O's first line, which remained in the game until the one-minute mark.

The W-P bench finished the final five minutes of the game.

"We just wanted it more tonight," Waitsburg-Prescott coach T.J. Scott said. "(T-O) is not 30 points worse than we are. Our effort was through the roof. It was amazing.

"We knew we had to attack," he said. "We couldn't sit out there and shoot 3s all day against them, because we're not that great of a shooting team. But we've got big guys inside, we've got great slashers and we rebound well. We missed a lot of bunnies and free throws tonight, so the score could have been a lot worse."

Tekoa-Oakesdale coach Adam Ellis concurred with Scott's assessment.

"They just wanted it more than we did," Ellis said. "They killed us on the boards. We had to play perfect to beat them, and we played far from it tonight."

Sophomore Zach Bartlow led the W-P attack with the best game of his career to date, racking up a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double. Senior Lucan Gerke nearly duplicated the feat with a 14-point, nine-board night.

"Gerke and Bartlow were amazing and everyone else did their parts on defense tonight," Scott said.

"Zach (Bartlow) was huge on the glass today," he said. "He was huge inside. He missed a lot of layins and free throws. He could have had 25 (points)."

"We really want to go to state. It's been our goal all year," Bartlow said. "This was a big one, and we came out and just wanted it more."

"We were in the right positions on the boards, we got the bounces, and we were just trying harder than they were," Gerke said. "Hopefully, we go out and play as well as we played tonight and with the same mentality against Gar-Pal. We need to go all-out."

W-P's next opponent is North Division No. 1 Garfield-Palouse, a 56-44 winner over DeSales Thursday in Palouse. The W-P/Gar-Pal winner's bracket clash is set for Monday at Whitman College at 4:30 p.m.

W-P fell by a single point to the Vikings a week and a half ago in Palouse.

"Gar-Pal's short and quick and they've got shooters," Scott said. "They've got Gavin Burt, who is probably the best player I've seen this year. He's good at the high post and he can extend out to NBA (3-point) range. He absolutely killed us up there.

"The loss was a good learning experience for us," he said. "We have some things to work on and we'll be ready for Gar-Pal on Monday."

Tekoa-Oakesdale falls into a 3 p.m. Saturday loser-out contest in Colfax versus DeSales.
