MILTON-FREEWATER - Andrea Roeder of Mac-Hi led all scorers with 22 points, and had four steals, two blocks and three rebounds to pace her team to a 48-36 victory over Baker in the Greater Oregon League regular-season finale.
"Andrea has really got with it the last couple games," Mac-Hi coach Curtis Pumphrey said. "She has been driving to the hoop to score and open up other teammates when the double teams come. She has been really important to us, driving the lane and getting to the free-throw line too."
On senior night, two other upperclassmen posts, Kasey Erm and Sierra Burchell, also had notable performances in their last home game of their high school careers.
Erm had 10 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
"Ten points was a high for Erm this season," Pumphrey said. "She was real aggressive on the glass with rebounds, putbacks and taking the ball to the hoop."
Burchell contributed 13 points, four steals and three rebounds.
The Pioneers took care of the ball, giving up 11 total turnovers.
Mac-Hi also played good team defense, forcing 20 Baker turnovers and picking up 12 steals.
"We ran a 3-2 zone for most of the game," Pumphrey said. "Baker has been averaging six-to-10 3-pointers a game, so that extra person on the top of the zone was helpful tonight."
The game got off to a slow start, with the score being 3-2 after the first quarter.
Whitney Phillips of Baker made the first bucket of the game to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.
Roeder was responsible for the only Mac-Hi points that quarter with a 3-pointer.
Baker did not take another lead until the third quarter.
Erm and Roeder each scored two hoops apiece in the second quarter, with a bucket inside by Burchell to make it 13-9 Pioneers at halftime.
Baker and Mac-Hi upped the scoring pace in the second half.
Both teams scored 15 points in the third quarter to make it 28-24 Mac-Hi.
At the five-minute mark, Baker took a short-lived, two-point advantage before the Pioneers answered.
Burchell had six points in the third stanza to lead the way.
Roeder exploded for nine of her 22 points in the fourth as Mac-Hi outscored Baker, 20-12, in the quarter to pull away.
The two teams have a rematch in the district playoffs in Baker on Tuesday. The winner goes to the state tournament, while the loser goes home.
The Pioneers' league record for the year is 3-6, up from 1-8 last season. Mac-Hi beat all of its three conference opponents once.
"We are improving as a program," Pumphrey said. "Our seniors are playing well and lots of our younger players are getting some experience.
"I hope the win tonight keeps the momentum going into the next game."
