ENDICOTT - Marshall Byerley scored 22 points here Friday afternoon to lead the Touchet Indians to a 54-50 victory over Colton in an elimination game at the Southeast 1B District 9 boys basketball tournament.

The Indians improved to 13-11 and played a winner-to-state, loser-out game against St. John-Endicott Saturday night.

Touchet trailed 13-6 in the opening period before Kevin Ford hit a baseline jumper to end a 7-0 spurt and knot the score at 13-13 at the quarter buzzer.

The Indians maintained their momenutm throughout the second quarter and outscored the Wildcats 14-4 in the frame.

"We forced some turnovers, got some steals, and worked the ball well," Touchet coach Tim McKeown said.

Byerley hit three 3s in the second period as the Indians took a 27-17 lead into halftime.

Touchet surrendered half of that advantage in the third quarter as Colton tallied 15 points to the Indians' 10.

One reason for the comeback was foul difficulty, McKeown said. Jake Hodnefield, who ended up with 11 points, picked up his third foul in the second quarter and was whistled for his fourth late in period three.

Despite the adversity, the Indians managed to hang on by clutching up at the charity stripe. Hodnefield, who re-entered the game midway through the fourth quarter, and Byerley were a combined 8-for-10 (Hodnefield was 6-for-8) in the last stanza.

"Free throws were a big part of winning the game," McKeown said.

While the Indians made 12 of their 15 free throws in the game, Colton connected on just four of 17 tries.
