Whitman swept in Friday baseball doubleheader at the College of Idaho

NAMPA, Idaho - College of Idaho ran its early season record to 4-2 with a doubleheader sweep of Whitman College here Friday afternoon.

Whitman, slipping to 0-6 on the season, lost the nine-inning opener 10-2 and came up short 3-0 in the seven-inning nightcap. The same two clubs played two more games on Saturday.

The Coyotes, who posted a 28-20 record last spring while playing in the NAIA-affiliated Cascade Conference, notched its first-game victory by scoring in every inning but one. Diego Robles, a senior third baseman, blasted a two-run homer and knocked in two more runs with a single and sacrifice fly.

Senior catcher Eric Korsmo had three of Whitman's six hits and scored both of its runs. In the fourth, Korsmo singled, stole second and touched home when senior Jason Sease rapped an RBI-single to center. Korsmo doubled to lead off the sixth frame and scored on another Sease single.

Whitman threatened in the top of the first. Senior Brian Kitamura walked and moved to second when Korsmo dropped a one-out single into left field. Kitamura and Korsmo followed with a double steal, but a strike-out and ground-out left both runners stranded.

After Sease drilled his first run-scoring single in the fourth inning, trimming Whitman's deficit to 4-1, Whitman had a chance to add more runs. Senior Joe Rodhouse, who had reached base on an error in front of Sease, moved to third and Sease took second on a wild pitch.

But Idaho starter Jacob Coats fanned the next two Missionaries to squelch that threat.

Whitman stranded two more runners in the seventh. With one out, junior Patrick Stauffer singled and advanced to second when Kitamura drew his second walk of the game. Two ground-outs kept the Missionaries from capitalizing.

In game two, Korsmo took the mound and scattered seven hits while holding the Coyotes to two earned runs. But Korsmo and senior Blaine Mercado had Whitman's only two hits as Chad Yeggy, an all-conference hurler from a year ago, struck out seven in posting his seven-innning shutout.

Two of Whitman's first three batters in the first inning were hit by pitches, but both were thrown out trying to steal second base. In the Missionary second, Korsmo was left stranded in scoring position after he singled and stole second base.

The Coyotes nicked Korsmo for a run in the bottom of the second with a double, sacrifice bunt and RBI-sacrifice fly. The home team added an unearned run in the fourth courtesy of a two-out base on balls and single to center field that bounced away from the fielder.
