Grizzlies beat Ione, take third seed to state

Helix wins a defensive battle Saturday, and then gets to relax with a berth in the state tournament secure.

UMATILLA - Helix's girls earned the third-seed out of the District 6 tournament into the state competition with a 31-28 victory over Ione here Saturday afternoon.

The Grizzlies, who lost to Dufur Friday to fall into the loser-out game Saturday, couldn't be happier with their seeding, coach Dean Fouquette said.

"I'm very pleased with our draw to the state playoffs," Fouquette said. "We were extremely disappointed with our loss (to Dufur), but the No. 3 seed might prove to be a better avenue to get to the final eight (at state)."

The top two seeds from the district tournament face some of the top teams in the state to begin the state tournament, Fouquette said.

Helix opens state play Tuesday, probably at Joseph, he said.

"I'm feeling pretty good," Fouquette said. "We can sit back and laugh all day (during the rest of the district tournament Saturday), and know for a fact we're going to the state tournament. The pressure's off of us, and that's a good feeling."

Both Helix and Ione felt that pressure throughout their game Saturday, he said.

"When you get into a playoff game where the winner goes to state, and loser goes home, there's a lot of pressure on the kids," Fouquette said. "The kids were a little tight offensively, and they (Ione) were too. Neither one of us shot the ball well. Both teams limited the number of shots (the other) got at the basket."

The teams were knotted 9-all after the opening quarter, with the Grizzlies clawing out a 20-15 halftime edge. Ione answered back in the third quarter and the teams were tied at 24 headed into the final eight minutes.

"It was a good ball game," Fouquette said. "One of those two-point games that could have gone either way."

Helix's Kylee Rogers, who had a game-high 12 points, hit two free throws with 28 seconds left to give the Grizzlies a three-point margin, and Ione was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds.

Ione was led by Beth Morter's 11 points and seven rebounds.

Meghan Schroeder pulled down 10 boards for the Grizzlies to go with her nine points.
