TACOMA - Eric Eastman wrestled his way to a fifth-place finish at the Tacoma Dome in action at Mat Classic XXII.
Eastman, who claimed Wa-Hi's only state spot with a third-place finish at last week's regional tournament, was one of 16 wrestlers to open 189-pound competition in search of a state title.
Eastman opened his action with a 4-2 decision over Justin Grow of Lake Stevens.
That win advanced Eastman to the quarterfinals and a match with Mitch Steed of Puyallup's Emerald Ridge High School.
Steed squeaked out a 9-7 decision to send Eastman into the consolation round.
Steed advanced, with a semifinal pin of Wenatchee's Jacob Sealby, to the 189-pound title match against Nick Bayer of Tahoma.
Eastman bounced back to narrowly decision K.W. Williams of Thomas Jefferson, 3-2, and continue on course for the consolation finals.
Eastman was sidetracked by University's Dustin Johnson in his next match. Johnson posted an 8-0 win and sent Eastman into a battle for fifth place.
Eastman, in his fifth match of the tournament, rose to the occasion and decisioned Brad Gee of Stanwood 6-4 to earn the fifth-place trophy.
