NAMPA, Idaho - College of Idaho took different routes in sweeping a pair of non-conference baseball games, 13-1 and 9-0, from Whitman College here Saturday afternoon.
In the nine-inning opener, the Coyotes scored eight runs late in the game to win going away. In the seven-inning nightcap, they used a seven-run second inning to put an early stranglehold on that game.
College of Idaho elevated its record to 6-2 while dropping a young, short-handed Whitman squad to 0-8.
The Missionaries jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. Sophomore Eric Tolleson singled with two outs, took second base when junior Erik Korsmo walked and then scored on a single through the left side by senior Blaine Mercado.
Tolleson also started on the mound for Whitman and held the Coyotes scoreless on two hits through three innings. Tolleson lost his control in the fourth, hitting four batters and walking a fifth to help the home team push across two runs.
Two more walks and three hits led to three more Idaho runs in the fifth frame. The Coyotes then broke the game open with five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh.
Meanwhile, four Idaho pitchers held Whitman's offense to four hits, two by junior shortstop Jay Richards. Korsmo was one for two at the dish with two base on balls.
A double, ground-out and run-scoring sacrifice fly gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead to start the second game. After Whitman left two runners stranded in the second inning, Idaho parlayed seven hits, one walk, two hit-batters and one Missionary fielding error into seven second-inning runs.
Richards, Mercado, Patrick Stauffer and freshman Justin Weeks had Whitman's four hits in game two.
Whitman continues non-conference play with four games next weekend at a tournament hosted by Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore. Whitman plays single games on Friday and Saturday followed by two games on Sunday.
Three of next weekend's four games are against Northwest Conference rivals, although none of the games count toward the conference standings.
Whitman kicks off its NWC season when it hosts Puget Sound in a three-game series on Saturday and Sunday, March 6-7.
