WALLA WALLA -- The trial for a man charged in connection with a gang-related melee outside St. Patrick Catholic Church last June has been postponed in Walla Walla County Superior Court.

Mario R. Aguayo, 18, of 737 N. Seventh Ave., now is scheduled to face a jury May 11 and 12. The proceedings had been set to begin March 2.

Aguayo has pleaded innocent to charges of riot and second-degree assault. He allegedly armed himself with a bat and hit several people with it shortly before midnight June 13.

Aguayo was one of at least three people injured in the reported brawl. He suffered a head injury when he was struck with a bat and punched and kicked, officials said.

Several co-defendants have pleaded guilty to various charges related to the fight and have been sentenced.

Most of the suspects, including Aguayo, were arrested Sept. 3 during a coordinated sweep by area law enforcement officers. Aguayo was released on a bail bond pending the outcome of his case.
