Grizzlies upend North Lake, 42-37

Helix next faces Jewell Wednesday in Baker City as the state tournament continues.

NORTH LAKE, Ore. - Helix players drew praise from coach Dean Fouquette for their performances in a 42-37 district girls basketball victory over North Lake here on Saturday.

As a result of the win, the Grizzlies advance to the top eight teams in the Oregon Class 1A state tournament.

Helix, 23-6, plays Jewell, from the north Oregon coast, at 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in Baker City.

"That will be a short trip for us after the 342-mile, two-day trek to North Lake," Fouquette said. "It's (North Lake) about 81 miles southeast of Bend."

Kylee Rogers led the Grizzlies with 16 points, including several key free throws down the stretch.

Meghan Schroeder and Chyanne Hack battled on the boards for 12 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

Claire Ely popped a key 3-pointer and stood out on defense.

Point guard Addie Terjeson managed the Grizzlies offense to overcome an early deficit and hold on to a slim lead in the final minutes. She fed the ball inside with sharp passes and read the defense well, Fouquette said.

The Cowboys' Leslie Dark scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, and Amanda Dark pulled off 10 rebounds.

"North Lake didn't shoot real well, but they scored well inside, and they crashed the boards," Foquette said.

North Lake led 18-14 after the first period.

"We were down by three to eight points in the first half, but we got it going and cut it to three at halftime," Fouquette said. "Then, in the second half, we played better defense and got our offense going. We took our first lead with about four minutes left in the third quarter.

"We managed to keep a lead of about two to six points," Fouquette continued. "They cut it to one point, but Kylee came right back with a score to make it three again."

In the final minute, Rogers hit three shots from the line, and Hack hit one in the final four seconds for the Grizzlies' winning margin.

"It was a great playoff game," Fouquette said. "Our kids played a real good pressure-packed game.

"When it was over, we were so relieved that we stayed on the court for about 45 minutes," Fouquette said.
