BOARDMAN, Ore. — The Mac-Hi Pioneer matmen rolled into Riverside’s Rumble on the River wrestling tournament here Saturday, and rolled out with first-place honors.
Mac-Hi’s 257.5 points was nearly double the total of 13 of the other 14 teams at the tournament.
Selah finished second with 249 points, followed by Liberty (Spangle)’s 133, Pendleton’s 127, and Riverside’s 122.
Only one Pioneer won his weight class. Jesse Sargent took the title at 125 pounds, with teammate Tavis Hodgens taking third at the same weight.
Ryan Bullock, Joey Paez, and Angel Palacios lost their title matches to place second at 130, 140 and 285 respectively.
"Palacios wrestled a really good kid from Selah," Mac-Hi coach Beau Chester said. "He ended up losing 6 to 5. They were on their feet at the end, but (Palacios) couldn’t quite get the take-down.
"Angel’s been in the top three in almost every tournament we’ve been in. He’s having a very strong senior year."
Also finishing third was Mike Rogers at 119, Braden Moller at 140, Wyatt Law at 152 and Brandon Kralman at 189.
Four other Pioneers also placed at the tournament.
"It definitely was a team effort today," Chester said. "We only had four in the finals today, and we could have had six. Those kids lost some close matches today, but they battled back and got third and fourth place finishes. Whenever you can do that you’ve had a good day."
The Pioneers next wrestle Friday and Saturday in the 16-team, Class 4A, Oregon Classic at Redmond.
"It’s a good tournament. It’s starts our dual season," said Chester. "You get three dual matches on Friday. Depending on how you do, you wrestle another one to three more matches on Saturday. The top two from each four-team pool make the quarterfinals on Saturday."
The Pioneers will get their first look at league foe Ontario during the tournament.
