MAUPIN, Ore. — Helix made the three-hour sojourn to Maupin with just five of the original eight players from its season-opening varsity roster. The lack of depth showed as the talented, but undermanned, Grizzlies fell late to league foe South Wasco, 37-36, in Big Sky League action here Saturday.

Two weeks ago the Helix girls were ranked No. 3 in Oregon’s Class 1A, and undefeated at 7-0. But in back-to-back games, Helix lost starters Britney Smith to a season-ending torn ACL, and Meghan Schroeder to a broken nose. During the same stretch, a key substitute quit the team, leaving the Grizzlies with only five varsity players.

Even down numbers, the Grizzlies looked good early against South Wasco, outscoring the Redsides 10-5 in the opening quarter, a lead they would hold until midway through the fourth quarter.

With 27 seconds left on the clock and the Redsides up 35-34, Helix’s Nicci Thompson drew a foul and went to the line to shoot two. Thompson buried both free throws, but the Redsides’ Carly O’Neal responded with an 18-footer from the wing 20 seconds later. Helix coach Dan Fouquette called timeout with 7 seconds left to set up a play, but the good look Helix got came up empty at the buzzer.

"It was a close game — a 2-, 3-, 4-point game all night." Fouquette said. "It was a good win for South Wasco, but a tough loss for us."

Helix was led in scoring by Kylee Rogers 14 points. Chyanne Hack earned another double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

O’Neal’s final two were part of a South Wasco team high 13-point night.

Since the injuries to Smith and Schroeder, the Grizzlies have gone 1-3.

Helix has a tough test ahead on Tuesday, when the Grizzlies face division rival and title contender Nixyaawii at Mission. Helix hopes to have Schroeder back for the contest, but according to Fouquette, the matter is still undecided.
