WALLA WALLA — Caitlin Duncan scored a game-high 23 points Tuesday night as DeSales built a 19-5 lead after one quarter and eased its way to 73-28 victory over Weston-McEwen in non-league girls basketball action at the Irish gym.

DeSales improved its record to 6-1 and dropped the TigerScots to 1-8.

Duncan scored nine of her points in the opening quarter. Annie Higgins added a pair of 3-point field goals to help the Irish establish a 14-point spread after eight minutes.

DeSales increased its lead to 31, 41-10, by halftime. Duncan tallied eight points in the second period and reserve Ali Zander contributed five.

The Irish limited the TigerScots to three baskets in the first half and forced 15 turnovers.

"Our defense is getting better every time we take the floor," DeSales coach Tim Duncan said. "Our help defense is getting better."

Duncan and Stephanie Ferrel hit a pair of 3s apiece in the third quarter as DeSales extended its advantage to 38, 58-20, heading into the final frame.

Sydney Porter, who led Weston-McEwen with 12 points on the night, had eight in the third stanza.

"She came on in the third quarter," Weston-McEwen coach Amber Doremus said. " Our girls worked hard the whole time."

Katie Hanson led the Irish in the final quarter with five points. Zander chipped in with four.

In all, 11 of the 12 Irish athletes who competed in the contest scored at least one point.

DeSales made 12-of-32 shots from outside the arc and outrebounded the TigerScots. 46-34.

"We were really aggressive shooting the ball," coach Duncan said. "Our posts are getting touches, and when they are getting touches, that opens up the perimeter.

"The shots we’re getting are pretty open looks," coach Duncan said. "We had some great possessions moving the ball."

Both teams return to league play Friday night. The Irish travel to Waitsburg-Prescott for a Blue Mountain 2B League match-up and Weston-McEwen is at Stanfield for a Blue Mountain Conference game.
