Free throws seal Golden Eagle girls' win over Grizzlies

MISSION, Ore. — Free throws were the difference for the Nixyaawii girls against Big Sky rival Helix here Tuesday night.

The Grizzlies hit 4-of-11 from the charity stripe in the final eight minutes, and the Golden Eagles made 2-of-6.

But Nixyaawii’s Kanisha Perry made her team’s two free throws with one second remaining to lift the Golden Eagles to the 38-37 victory.

"It was a close game all the way through," Helix coach Dean Fouquette said. "Even though we were shut out in the second quarter, the rest of the game was really a two-point game, back-and-forth. It was just one of the those good high-school games."

The Grizzlies held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles responded by outscoring Helix 9-0 in the second to hold the 15-12 halftime lead.

Helix pulled within one entering the fourth quarter, but the late free throws handed the Grizzlies their third Big Sky League defeat.

"It was a tough loss for us, but a good win for them," Fouquette said. "We had all sorts of chances to win the game, but we didn’t make free throws."

The game marked the return of Megan Schroeder, who missed five games with a broken nose. Schroeder scored seven points and grabbed 16 rebounds with just one practice under her belt after her injury.

"She played a hard game," Fouquette said. "Chyanne Hack had good inside play and rebounding for us.

"(Nixyaawii’s) Mariah Withers had a real good game, consistent throughout," he said. "And Kanisha Perry did a tremendous job rebounding, and hit the two free throws to give them the win."

Helix entertains Condon-Wheeler Friday night, and heads to Central Christian Saturday.

"Starting 0-3 in league is not the way we imagined it," Fouquette said. "We have our work cut out for us. But this might make the girls a little hungrier, and work harder in practice. We have to put some streaks together and start winning some games."
