Pirate boys' third-quarter rush to no avail

WASHTUCNA — Pomeroy scored 19 unanswered points to close out the third quarter here Tuesday night, but the Pirates couldn’t sustain their charge in the fourth and Lacrosse-Washtucna came away with a 44-40 victory in a boys Southeast B District Northern Division basketball game.

"It all happened in about a two-minute span," first-year Pomeroy coach Brian Koller said of his team’s third-quarter explosion. "We were behind 32-16 with about two minutes left in the quarter. We put a little pressure on them, they coughed the ball up and we got some easy baskets real quick.

"But I think it kind of ran us down in the fourth quarter."

After trailing 27-14 at halftime, Pomeroy took a 35-32 lead into the game’s fourth period. But the Tigercats outscored the Pirates 12-5 the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Jeff Zimmer tallied 16 points and Jake Aune added 12 to pace L-W. Grant Jenkins had 16 points for the Pirates and Justin Ruark came next with nine points.

It was a disappointing homecoming for Koller, who was Lacrosse-Washtucna’s boys head coach for 10 seasons before taking over at Pomeroy this year. But Koller is right at home in Pomeroy as well, having graduated from Pomeroy High in 1985.

Pomeroy, now 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the division, travels to Asotin Friday for another Northern Division contest and is at Liberty Christian Saturday in a cross-division game.
