ASOTIN — Walla Walla Valley Academy won three quarters, but a cold third period led to a 73-69 boys Southeast B crossover basketball loss to Asotin here Wednesday.

After leading 37-31 at halftime, the Knights lost the third quarter 25-12. WWVA battled back to win the final period 20-17, but it could not overcome the deficit.

"Asotin came out strong in the third quarter," WWVA coach Les Balk said. "We won the first, second and fourth quarters, but they crushed us in the third."

The Knights’ Michael Hanson led all scorers with 22 points. Brad Luce and Caleb Sauerbier chipped in 14 and 13 points, respectively.

"It was a hard-fought game," Balk said. "I don’t have the numbers, but we lost it on the boards. They got way too many second shots. And if they missed the second shot, they drew a foul. It was a very physical game, and we got into foul trouble and couldn’t keep up."

The Panthers went to the line 26 times and converted 14 free throws, while the Knights went 8-for-11 from the line.

WWVA takes a 2-2 record to Tri-Cities Prep for a 7:30 p.m. game on Monday.
