Foundation scholarships available to area students

All kinds of scholarships are established for any number for reasons. For Bart Brittain of Walla Walla, creating that sort of memorial to his deceased son was a chance to honor the things Larry Brittain loved.

Bart lost Larry, a Walla Walla High School graduate, to coronary heart disease. In the wake of that, Bart established a scholarship at Blue Mountain Community Foundation, open to applicants pursuing higher education.

And because Larry loved playing baseball and was an "above average player," the yearly scholarship will go to graduates who were involved with youth baseball, Bart explained,

The Larry Jay Brittain Memorial Scholarship Fund is just one of the foundation's annual scholarships and applications for all are available for students seeking financial aid for the 2010-2011 school year.

While most awards are for need-based aid to graduates of Walla Walla County high schools or individuals who have lived in Walla Walla County for at least three years, there are some scholarships available to students in Columbia and Garfield counties and northern Umatilla County.
