ASOTIN — It went from bad to worse for the Pomeroy Pirates here Friday night as they suffered a 41-30 loss to Asotin in a girls Southeast B District Northern Division basketball game.

The Pirates’ Karlie Martin suffered a thumb injury in pregame warmups that limited her effectiveness throughout the game. Sadie Slaybaugh suffered a head injury in the second quarter that sent her to a local hospital for X-rays and a CAT scan. And in the second half, leading scorer HayLee Koller left the game after picking up her fifth foul.

"I think we had a good game plan, but numberswise we were forced to change our game plan," Pomeroy coach Nettie Severs said. "Losing Sadie really threw us for a loop, and I think our youth and our lack of ability to adjust to game situations showed."

Slaybaugh was released from the hospital with no major injuries, Severs said, but will be held out for five days as a precaution for concussion.

The Panthers outscored the Pirates in every quarter. They led 13-7 after one quarter, 19-12 at the half and took charge by outscoring Pomeroy 11-2 in the third quarter for a 30-14 advantage going into the game’s final eight minutes.

Shelby Barnes led the way for Asotin with 19 points while Jolisa Jose was also in double figures with 11 points to go with eight rebounds. Zara Reynolds also had eight boards for the Panthers, who outrebounded Pomeroy 34-19.

Koller led the Pirates with eight points before her early exit via the five-foul route. Melissa Bartlow and Sam Smith scored six points each and Kindsey Bott added five points and a team-high six rebounds.

"Once again we had trouble shooting the ball," Severs said of her team’s 11-for-40 effort from the field. "We got good shots but they didn’t fall. And we turned the ball over 28 times as well."

The loss dropped Pomeroy to a 3-6 record overall going into a Saturday night cross-division game at Liberty Christian.
