WALLA WALLA — DeSales’ boys enjoyed a stellar first quarter against Garfield-Palouse Saturday night, racing to an eight-point lead before Gar-Pal pulled within two as the second quarter started.

But the Irish couldn’t run with the Vikings down the stretch and lost the non-leaguer, 71-55.

"It was a much tighter game than the final score indicated," DeSales coach Mike Giusti said. "We broke out in the first quarter, and then they went to a 1-3-1 zone, which we hadn’t seen before. But we figured it out, and the middle two quarters were pretty even. We were down by six with a few minutes to go, and then had to start fouling. They made 8-of-13 free throws down the stretch and opened up their lead.

"I thought we played hard," he said. "We’re coming along."

Pat Richard led the Irish with 16 points, with Victor Mata putting up 11.

Gavin Burt had 19 points for the Vikings, with Blake Slocum adding 16 and J.B. Lange 10.

DeSales, 2-7 overall, hosts Liberty Christian at 7:30 p.m. Friday night and travels to Pomeroy Saturday.
