Patriots' big third quarter too much for Pomeroy girls

RICHLAND — A 21-8 third quarter proved the turning point in the Liberty Christian Patriot’s girls basketball battle here Saturday versus Pomeroy, 53-34.

"We came out flat in the third and lethargic a little bit. They came out aggressive, and we turned the ball over," Pomeroy coach Nettie Severs said. "We were only down by six at the half, but after (the third period) we just couldn’t recover."

Liberty Christian was led in scoring by Kelsey Harding’s 20 points, including three from behind the arc. Hannah Berges chipped in 14.

"We’re playing without one of my starting guards (Sadie Slaybaugh, who was injured Friday night at Asotin). That changed the (defensive) game plan for us. The zone gave them a lot of open looks from the outside and they made the shots," Severs said.

"We didn’t handle their press well, and it didn’t help losing one of our main ball handlers."

HayLee Koller led the Pirate charge with 13 points and five assists. Kindsey Bott added another eight points and nine rebounds for Pomeroy.

The loss dropped the Pirates to 3-7 on the season.

Pomeroy plays again this Friday at home versus Rosalia.
